Agent Carter Case Study

This clip from Agent Carter uses a wide variety of technical elements to depict the struggle of women in agent positions, and her struggle to ne recognized.

In the beginning scenes Peggy loses someone close to her. During the scene she's wearing red lipstick which could depict power or love. The scene contrasts this control with her lack of control over Captain Americas decision to sacrifice his life. Setting up Future scenes, depicting how her gender effects her in the workplace.

In the workplace Agent Carter struggles for recognition. She is placed way in the back of the office, connoting that she isn't seen as important. She is also referred to differently by the other characters, being called darling and sweetheart, which may be perceived as demeaning. Claude-Levi Strauss's Theory suggest that her co-workers either see her as part of the group or separate from the group. By not inviting her to go drink with the group they are expressing that she's not part of the group.

In response, Agent Carter feels like she needs to prove herself. This is symbolized by a short chiaroscuro, contrasting the red light of the phone and the dark space of the office. The darkness may reflect boredom, but safety while red could represent danger and desire. Reflecting the choice Agent Carter has to make in that moment, between complacency in return for safety or chase her desire to prove herself and placing herself in danger.

Even when Agent Carter places herself in danger however, she is still underestimated. When the antagonists see Agent Carter they immediately brush off any potential harm, calling it a "pleasure" to take care of. Agent Carter immediately proves them wrong.

In conclusion, Agent Carter uses color, mise en scene, and language to convey its message on how women were treated in the time period.
