Movie Analysis

 Storytelling: 15 Practitioner

The story seemed simple at first, two men discussing women over a game of chess. They discuss their love interests, one has a wife, the other is hitting on a married woman. While the twist seems obvious when you say it that directly, the movie does a great job slowly revealing this information over time. Leaving the audience repeatedly and increasingly shocked.

Camera Work and Editing: 20 Expert

This is a simple scene, two people playing chess. But the camera work really sets the tone. Sharp close ups and low angles show the invisible competition between the too. There's the obvious competition in the chess game but the invisible competition, of one realizing the girl the other is talking about is his wife, and the other characters sudden realization that of that fact later in the movie. The camera shots cut between the two, sometimes highlighting the chess game when plot relevant, this helps show the comparison between the characters dynamic and a game of chess (a theme depicted in the short film).

Audio: 10 Apprentice

The dialogue does a good job at progressing the story, which is a relief since the dialogue is the main way the story is told, but there's a complete lack of music, and very little sound design. The climatic sound of a chess piece hitting the board when someone won would've been a good addition that's omitted in the short film.

Actors: 15 Practitioner

The acting was solid, complimented the story well, not much extraordinary, however.
